Pakistan started blocking access to Twitter/X on 17th February 2024, and recent OONI data suggests that the block remains ongoing.
The following chart aggregates OONI measurement coverage from the testing of twitter.com
and x.com
in Pakistan between 8th February 2024 to 28th February 2024.
twitter.com
and x.com
in Pakistan between 8th February 2024 to 28th February 2024 (source: OONI data). As is evident, the OONI Probe testing of both twitter.com
and x.com
started to present a spike in anomalies on 17th February 2024, while both domains were previously found accessible on tested networks in Pakistan. These anomalies – combined with reports – suggest that access to Twitter/X’s web service was blocked.
Between 8th February 2024 to 28th February 2024, Twitter/X was tested on 38 ASes in Pakistan and consistently presented anomalies on most tested networks from 17th February 2024 onwards. Most of the anomalous measurements from the testing of both x.com
and twitter.com
show connection timeouts after the ClientHello message during the TLS handshakes, suggesting TLS level interference. This is consistent with other TLS level blocks observed and documented in Pakistan. Recent OONI data shows that the blocking of Twitter/X in Pakistan remains ongoing.
If you are in Pakistan, you can test Twitter/X and contribute more measurements by running OONI Probe.
