On 26th May 2025, Indonesia started blocking access to the Internet Archive (archive.org
). The block was reportedly lifted on 29th May 2025, once the Internet Archive complied with a government request to remove “harmful content”.
The following chart aggregates OONI measurement coverage from the testing of archive.org
in Indonesia between 20th May 2025 to 31st May 2025.
archive.org
in Indonesia between 20th May 2025 to 31st May 2025 (source: OONI data). As is evident from the chart, many OONI measurements for archive.org
are automatically annotated as “confirmed blocked” between 26th May 2025 to 29th May 2025. Based on OONI’s methodology, we are able to automatically confirm the blocking of websites based on fingerprints when a block page is served, or when DNS resolution returns an IP associated with censorship.
OONI data shows that when archive.org
was tested, DNS resolution returned IPs associated with block pages (e.g., 103.94.168.168
, 158.140.186.3
, 202.3.218.137
, 103.145.125.18
) on at least 9 networks in Indonesia. This indicates that access to the Internet Archive was intentionally blocked on (at least) nine networks.
If you are in Indonesia, you can contribute more measurements by running OONI Probe.
