Big news! Today, after five years, we’re releasing an updated brand identity, which includes a new logo.

We are the Digital Society of Africa!

We believe that this new look better matches what we’ve become since 2015: an organization that works to strengthen the digital resilience of human rights defenders across the Africa region.

Since our founding in 2015, we have identified ourselves as the Digital Society of Zimbabwe, however in the last few years, we have changed quite a lot: we found ourselves spreading our wings beyond our beloved country’s borders, doing more and more work to support human rights defenders in the region. More requests continue to pour in still from across the continent, indicating also the urgent need to expand the community of incident responders in the region.

Needless to say, the time for a change is nigh, to reflect this new reality.

Our design goal was simple – to better match how we look to our values and the users we serve. We worked to find something that appeared relevant, smart and connected to the region.

We have also expanded our team as well as the scope of our work; with our newest project being a new digital security training-of-trainers program intended to achieve the double objective of increasing available capacity to support environmental activists as well as contribute to the growth of the digital security trainers network, in order to effectively cater for increased demand on the continent. We also have a brand spanking sleek new website too, designed for maximum functionality while incorporating the ethos of simplicity and minimalism.

We take this opportunity to thank both our regional and international partners for your solid support and believing in us. We look forward to exploring new synergies and partnerships fueled by your continued support as we embark on this exciting new identity.

We undertake in-depth risk assessments with human rights defenders; activists and journalists to understand and develop their ‘threat model’ – which then informs the nature of intervention and focus areas for training where necessary. Digital security trainings respond to the needs of the participants and seek to address identified security risks through knowledge and skills sharing as well as use of various privacy and security tools. If you are interested in hosting a digital security workshop, having us talk about digital security awareness at your organization or event or want to talk to us about our digital security-training program, please get in touch on info@digitalsociety.africa

Recognizing that behavior change takes time, where possible DSA offers longer-term digital security accompaniment to selected at-risk groups or human rights organisations. Over a protracted period, organizations are hand-held through the change management process. Our experience has demonstrated that a longer-term, participatory approach is the best way to support organizations to strengthen their security endeavors. This gives individuals more ‘practice time’ with security tools and behaviors, banking on the confidence of ongoing support. They are then guided through an organizational safety and security transition that entails among other things: holistic training; on-going advice; behavior change strategies and designing security policy.
