<p>Achel brewery runs out of monks to make its beer.<br />
Belgian brewery Achel has lost its Authentic Trappist Product label after its final two beer-brewing monks at St Benedict’s Abbey retired without being replaced. As reported by The Telegraph, Belgium’s Trappist beers are under threat from a shortage of sprightly new monks to replace their aged brewing brotherhood.<br />

Hey Strong Beer good people. I hope you’re doing well and connecting safely with each other. This year we are pausing on Strong Beer Month with Magnolia Brewing for obvious reasons.<br />
Strong Beer Month, every February, is largely a month-long retail event that relies strongly on people coming into our locations and enjoying the beers and themselves with our menu pairings, special events and frivolity. We are thinking about doing it later this year, but unsure about that at this point.<br />
We’ll see you again and if you have a Strong Beer Month glass from previous years, head over to the 21st Amendment Brewery and Magnolia and pick-up some beer and pour it into that glass and think of us, as we’re thinking of you. Take care and be well.<br />

<p>The month of February usually brings two of the Oregon Brewers Guild’s favorites: Oregon Craft Beer Month and its annual Zwickelmania open house-style event. Unfortunately, as the pandemic and state restrictions carry on, holding in-person events is still not an option. The good news is the Guild will be holding virtual Zwickelmania events, as well as releasing the fourth iteration of their State of Excitement collaboration beer.<br />
In an effort to help highlight Oregon Craft Beer Month, throughout February the Guild will be promoting its member breweries from across the state via their social media outlets. Origin stories, photos, beer releases, as well as food & beer specials will be the main focus.<br />

<p>One of Portland’s oldest breweries will cease production next month<br />
Portland Brewing, one of the Portland craft-beer scene’s founding breweries, will stop production after 34 years in downtown and industrial Northwest Portland next month, according to a post on the brewery’s Facebook page. The brewery will produce its last MacTarnahan’s Amber Ale by Feb. 5<br />

<p>PLINY THE YOUNGER RELEASE<br />
Pliny the Younger 2021 Release Cancelled at Both Breweries Due to COVID-19, Bottles Available ONLINE Only<br />
Like most major beer releases and other special events during this COVID-era, we are hitting the pause button and scaling back our annual 2021 Pliny the Younger release! Planning for the 2021 Younger release has been a huge topic of discussion for Vinnie, Natalie and key employees throughout 2020. It is very difficult to plan for much of anything these days, let alone a major beer release which draws thousands of visitors from all over the world to our 2 breweries in Sonoma County. We have had to make some hard decisions based on many factors, first and foremost being the health and safety of not only our employees and customers, but also the community in which we live. Our business operations are also dependent upon both state and local health orders which can change, and likely will continue to change, at anytime. Therefore, there will be no in person release at either brewery this year. While we are sad to miss seeing our loyal friends and fans from around the world, it has become clear that it will not be safe for us to gather again by February. Neither of our pubs have been allowed to reopen for indoor dining since we closed in March 2020 due to the unrelenting spread of the highly contagious coronavirus. In December, we had to shut down outdoor dining again due to a major virus surge which continues to ravage all of California. Although our Downtown Santa Rosa pub is still operating with takeout only, our Windsor pub will remain completely closed until further notice.</p>
<p>We just brewed this year’s 4 batches of Pliny the Younger, which is about 1/3 of what we produced last year. Our signature 510ml bottles will be available for sale as part of a mixed case for a limited time through our website for direct shipping to consumers within the state of California. Vinnie and Natalie plan to host a couple of virtual tastings during what would be our normal release time in February via Facebook LIVE! We are also taking this year off from wholesale draft distribution as the majority of our accounts who would carry Younger are either closed or only able to offer takeout. More importantly, we are very concerned for the health and safety of our wholesale accounts and their employees. Large crowds tend to gather wherever Younger is available, which can lead to unintended and dire consequences during a global pandemic. The last thing we want is to be responsible for creating super spreader event. We want everyone to be around enjoying Pliny the Younger in 2022! Mark Anthony Mueller, a prominent figure in Wilmington North Carolina’s craft beer scene, died after an extended illness. He was a partner at Waterline Brewing Co. in downtown Wilmington and was one of the founders of the Port City Brew Bus.<br />
He died Thursday night, according to an update to a <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.gofundme.com/f/lets-help-the-unofficial-mayor-of-ilm?fbclid=IwAR0-D8Dkdx_956T6hVyfay5gFRSe02_u5HaXJQh7SjaVropRYxMH9ewUZ9Y');" href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/lets-help-the-unofficial-mayor-of-ilm?fbclid=IwAR0-D8Dkdx_956T6hVyfay5gFRSe02_u5HaXJQh7SjaVropRYxMH9ewUZ9Y">GoFundMe campaign</a> that was started to help Mueller’s fight against kidney and liver disease.<br />
Mueller, 39, taught beer-making classes at Cape Fear Community College and was also a volunteer at Frying Pan Tower in the Atlantic Ocean. Friends posted on social media Friday remembering his friendly spirit, which earned him a nickname as an ‘unofficial mayor of Wilmington.’<br />

<p>Denver’s Falling Rock Tap House is selling off vintage bottles of beer it has collected over the years to generate revenue to stay in business.<br />
“What we’ve sold so far will give us at least six more weeks of life and if we can sell the whole collection off, that’ll probably give us closer to four or five months where we can hopefully survive through this thing,” owner Chris Black told Denver’s FOX31 News.<br />

A bar was struggling. Customers bought all its beer stock to keep it in business<br />
(CNN) — A Toronto bar owner says her business will survive the coronavirus pandemic thanks to the loyal customers who bought up her entire beer stock, giving her a desperately needed cash boost.<br />
Abra Shiner opened her bar, Swan Dive, five years ago in the Brockton Village neighborhood of Toronto, Canada. After Covid-19 restrictions forced her to shut the doors, Shiner decided to ask her community for help via Facebook.<br />
“We were blowing through our savings and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay rent towards the end of the month,” Shiner told CNN. “So, I wrote on Facebook asking people to come buy the beer we had in our stock room … and it worked. The post went viral.”<br />

<p>Brew: Museum of Beer to open online exhibit this month<br />
Remember Brew: The Museum of Beer? It was going to be a national attraction here in Pittsburgh.<br />
That was in August of 2016, and the folks behind the effort acknowledged that they had a lot of work to do. About two years later, the project’s principals were awarded a $59,700 grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to start with an exhibit in a Downtown storefront, but that effort never found a home for reasons including COVID-19’s arrival in the spring.<br />
Brew founder Joe McAllister says that later this month, the exhibit will launch online, a move OK’d by the PLCB and inspired, as he put it, “by the creativity and perseverance of the region’s breweries and restaurants.”<br />
The exhibit, “The Story of Beer in Pennsylvania,” tells that story from Penn’s Colony to the present, with video interviews of brewers, historians, collectors and craft beer pioneers such as brewer Carol Stoudt. Viewers can click on points on a timeline and watch more in a gallery.<br />
